On a frigid winter’s night in 1937, Mike and Frieda Kuntz were brutally murdered in front of their five-year-old son, Larry. Frank Robideau, a neighbor and the father of Larry’s best friend, had forced Mike to drive to a secluded spot near their home in eastern Montana. Feigning that he was reaching in his coat pocket for a cigarette, Robideau pulled out a revolver and shot Mike in the head. He then struggled with Frieda, who ferociously fought back, until he shot her through the heart. Within seconds, with a now-empty pistol, he turned his attention to little Larry, beating him with the weapon in an attempt to kill his only witness.
Driving to a nearby enclosed grain elevator, Robideau hid the car and his victims inside. Upon regaining consciousness, Larry managed to make his way to the local general store early the next morning. Stumbling inside, he came face-to-face with the murderer. Unknown to anyone in the small farming community, this man was a convicted killer who had escaped from prison 15 years earlier.
In 1937, the case made national news, garnering a strong outcry for justice. In less than two months from the time of the murders, Frank Robideau was hanged.
This is a story of survival and the amazing ability of the human spirit to transcend unspeakable cruelty. As a young adult, Larry Kuntz moved to Spokane, Washington, where he married, raised a family, had a successful career as a pharmacist, and today enjoys spending his retirement with his growing family.
